Thousands turn out for March for Democracy

21/11/2009 14:40:01

The March for Democracy in Auckland this afternoon is over, and speeches are now being made.

It was aimed at drawing attention to a series of citizen initiated referenda, which campaign groups say have been ignored.

Businessman Colin Craig poured hundreds of thousands into a publicity campaign, and he was hoping for a big turnout. He says we have voted to cut the number of MPs, take a harder line on crime, and for the repeal of the anti-smacking laws, but each time the views of the public have been disregarded.

Reporter James Williams estimates up to 6,000 people moved through the central city to let the government know they want the people's voice to be listened to..

The crowd chanted JOHN KEY, LISTEN TO ME, WE WANT DEMOCRACY.

James Williams says organisers who earlier were disappointed at the turnout are now saying they are very pleased. They are hoping the message will get through to the Prime Minister.

Organisers say that even if only a dozen people turned out for the march it would have still been worth it.
