Cop-killlers' partner gets compo

21/11/2009 12:12:02

A suicide support group says the partner of the Napier gunman Jan Molennar is perfectly entitled to compensation for his death.

The Accident Compensation Corporation has paid almost $10,000 to Delwyn Keefe as a 'survivor grant' and to cover funeral costs. Molenaar committed suicide after killing Senior Constable Len Snee and wounding two others during a three-day siege.

Solace Support Group spokesman Allan Aitken says Jan Molenaar's partner is no different to other suicide survivors.

"You can be highly outraged by it all because here's a guy who shot a policeman and somebody's got some money for it. But it's there, it's an entitlement and she's entitled to it because he did, in the finish commit suicide."

Mr Aitken says funeral grants for suicide survivors are especially important at a time when so many other things are going on.

The Government plans to scrap the grants.
