Franklin carve up expensive

21/11/2009 6:32:01

The Waikato District Council is not happy about the large bill it is facing as a result of the Auckland super city.

Under the proposed boundaries, it is set to lose and gain some ground to the Franklin District. The Local Government Commission says it will take a significant amount of work to make sure the rezoning goes smoothly.

Waikato Mayor Peter Harris says it is a hugely expensive undertaking, with changes to things such as libraries and roading which will need to be funded. However, he says the Government has not set aside any money to help fund the changes. He says almost every issue which will have to be addressed by Auckland councils, will need to be dealt with by Waikato as well.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Franklin says it is a relief to finally know which areas will and will not be in the new super city. Mark Ball says although locals are not happy to have the area hacked into two, at least they now know where the line is being drawn and must make the best of the situation.
