Mainstream helps expel controversial performer

16/11/2009 10:28:01

A gay newspaper editor is praising mainstream New Zealand for helping to get a controversial Jamaican performer kicked out of Auckland's Big Day Out.

Almost 2,000 people signed onto the Facebook group 'standing up against Beenie Man' because of one of his songs which talks about executing gays. There was also vigorous comment on a number of Internet forums, including C4TV and Gay NZ.

Big Day Out producers say the storm of protest meant Beenie Man's involvement would be too divisive.

Express editor, Hannah Jennings-Voykovich says she cannot believe the amount of support coming from outside the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender community. She says it is a positive result from a very passionate group of people.
