No decision yet on Beenie Man at BDO

13/11/2009 7:32:02

The organisers of Auckland's Big Day Out are refusing to say whether a homophobic reggae singer could be pulled from next year's lineup.

Jamaica's Beenie Man has written and sung about cutting the throats of all gay men, killing gay DJs, and hanging lesbians.

Big Day Out promoter Campbell Smith says they have yet to decide whether Beenie Man will be part of January's show. Mr Smith says since signing the Reggae Compassionate Act in 2007, Beenie Man has stayed true to his word in not performing offensive songs. He says they want to know whether he stands by that.

Mr Smith says the star's presence may compromise the show's core values, which include tolerance and understanding.. He says the concerns raised are being taken very seriously.
