Rural Report for Wednesday Nov 4th

04/11/2009 12:12:03

Green MP Sue Kedgley is having another shot at getting a group of MPs together to visit the country's pig farms.

An attempt six months ago, was knocked back by the industry after negative publicity concerning the use of sow crates.

Ms Kedgley says she was told it was because farmers feared visitors might bring swine flu onto farms. But now with the influenza scare over, she is trying again to get a cross-party group of MPs out to visit pig farms.

"Because I think it's important that New Zealanders see for themselves first hand the conditions in pig farms in New Zealand - and particularly their representatives in Parliament."

After criticism that a new code of practice for intensive pig farming was taking too long, Agriculture Minister David Carter expects a draft code for the pig farming industry to be out for consultation within a matter of weeks.

He say he has explained to Ms Kedgley that there is a legal process that has to be worked through and consultation must take place.

A reminder to farmers about safety on all terrain quad bikes.

Federated Farmers has issued an advisory on the recommendation of Coroner Tim Scott, following the death of Taranaki farm worker Lucinda Couchman in a quad bike accident earlier this year.

Spokesman Donald Aubrey says Ms Couchman's death is a stark reminder of the importance of quad bike safety. He says the most important lesson from the tragedy is how vital it is to wear helmets, which provide indisputable protection of the brain.

Mr Aubrey says farmers must lead by example and drill the message into their workers and contractors.
