More than 150 Auckland GPs have passed a vote of no-confidence in the city's new laboratory testing provider. Around 70 family doctors voiced their grievances about Labtests at a meeting last night. A further 80 cast proxy votes. Their complaints included problems with sample tracking, communication with the provider and the competence of Labtests' staff. One doctor at the meeting, Steve Culpan, says doctors need assurances Labtests' testing is reliable and safe for patients. He has been in practice since 1976 and says for the first time, he is getting results he no longer believes are accurate. Dr Culpan says the situation has left doctors with no choice but to repeat tests until the results return something they believe. Ian Rapson told the meeting he is not satisfied with Auckland Regional DHB chairman Pat Snedden's response that the DHB understands their concerns and is intervening with highly-trained clinical experts. He says it is great the DHB is trying to measure quality but a vote of no-confidence just is not fixable. Dr Rapson says the Minister of Health needs to be involved in the situation. Last month, the DHB returned 10 percent of the contract to provide laboratory testing to Diagnostic Medlab, the previous provider.
