Review of ACC sex abuse guidelines

27/10/2009 14:48:03

The ACC Minister has announced there will be a six month review of the new guidelines surrounding counselling and support for sexual abuse victims.

Nick Smith's announcement comes just hours after a 4,000 signature petition opposing cuts to sexual abuse counselling was presented to Parliament.

Dr Smith says he understands there is concern over the changes.

"I accept there is unease amongst respected professionals in some of those areas. And that's why today I'm announcing that there will be a six month review of this new process, to make sure it is working and looking after this particularly vulnerable group of New Zealanders."

Dr Smith is quick to stress he does have confidence in the clinical decision made by ACC in regards to sensitive claims.
