"Mission almost impossible" for NZ First

31/08/2009 15:52:02

Mission almost impossible is a former senior New Zealand First MP's assessment of the party's chances of getting back into power.

The party held its annual general meeting over the weekend with leader Winston Peters pledging they would be back for the 2011 general election.

But outside of Parliament, with a lower profile and no Parliamentary funding, former NZ First Leader Peter Brown says winning seats will not be easy.

"It's going to be real tough . . . that is why we've got to be disciplined and have a strong plan of action, keep the team in the camp. But is is a huge ask, it's one step removed from mission impossible."

Mr Brown maintains Mr Peters is the man to lead the party, but says there will need to be discipline from him and the party if there is to be any success.

The former MP was not at New Zealand First's AGM. He says that was due to other personal commitments.

Mr Brown says he is still part of New Zealand First but is unsure if he wants to run for Parliament again.

"I've still got an interest in politics, I can't walk away from that . . . time will tell whether I'll put my hand up again, I can't answer that now."

New Zealand First has already lost the services of former MPs Ron Mark and Doug Woolerton.
