Separated fathers not happy with counselling

22/07/2009 5:16:03

Counsellors are keen to address some of the issues identified in a study of separated fathers.

A study funded by the Families Commission has found fathers who have split from their children's mother are not happy with the support services available to them.

Relationship Services national practice manager Cary Hayward says fathers in the study believed the counselling process suited women, more than men. He says counselling agencies want to make their services accessible to clients and will take the feedback on board.

Mr Hayward says it is important men find a counsellor they are comfortable with, which can often be a male. He says men seeking counselling need to be clear on what their needs are and be willing to find a counsellor who can meet those needs.

A quarter of Relationship Services' counsellors are men.
