McDonald's scheme criticised

27/06/2009 10:20:02

There are calls for the Government to encourage young people to work in industries with decent wages, rather than at McDonald's. Work and Income will help fill some of the 6,000 vacancies McDonald's expects over the next three years.

Maritime Union general secretary Trevor Hanson says the scheme is condemning young people to a dead-end future. He says young New Zealanders should be given the opportunity to work in well-paid industries, such as maritime or fishing.

McDonald's is defending its agreement with Government to create jobs. McDonald's managing director Mark Hawthorne says the fast food chain is creating opportunities for the unemployed. He says inductees are given training then move very quickly on to higher than the minimum wage.
