Birdie-birdie for Smail

20/06/2009 11:12:04

David Smail has produced a birdie-birdie finish for an even par first round 70 at the US golf open.

That is four shots off the current clubhouse lead held by Swede Peter Hanson. Doug Batty has dropped back to four over after a double bogey at 12 followed by a bogey at 13.

Still he is in reasonable company - Tiger Woods has hit just seven fairways from 14 on his way to a four-over 74 - he is a bit surprised they shortened the course so much. Woods says some of the tees were moved up as much as 50 yards to take the rainy weather into account.

Michael Campbell has shot a seven-over par 77.
