Faumuina opts out of world champs

11/06/2009 5:32:02

The international track and field season is over for Beatrice Faumuina.

The former world champion will not throw the discus at the world track and field championships in Berlin in August. Faumuina decided to opt out of the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon last weekend after throwing more than five metres short of the A qualifying mark in New York the previous week.

Coach Ross Dallow says they weighed the issue carefully, but will now put in a hard winter's work and "rev up" for next season. He says they did consider the second meet but Faumuina is receiving no extra funding from Athletics New Zealand and is preparing for exams so decided to come home instead.

Faumuina is working towards a Bachelor of Business Studies.
