The Prime Minister's introduction of John Banks as the "super" mayor of Auckland is continuing to rile Mr Banks' mayoral colleagues. North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams is demanding the Prime Minister apologise to him and other regional mayors for effectively endorsing John Banks as the city's future mayor. But Labour Party Auckland Issues spokesman Phil Twyford thinks Mr Key needs to go further than that and apologise to Auckland ratepayers. He says the comment undercuts the integrity of the Auckland reform process. Meanwhile John Key says it is rubbish to describe his comment as an endorsement of John Banks - it was simply a comment about John Banks being a "super" mayor. However Labour and National remain at odds over the consultation process. National's John Carter, who chairs the Select Committee handling the supercity legislation, says there is plenty of time for people to have their say on the changes - up until April next year. But Labour MP Phil Twyford says the guts of the legislation, which shapes the council's structure, is being consulted on now and people only have until the end of this month to have their say. He says it is effectively the only window people have and while there will be more legislation at the end of the year it will come after most of the big decisions have been made.
