Hikoi support widens

22/05/2009 6:36:02

Iwi in Papakura, south of Auckland, are the latest group to join Monday's hikoi, protesting about the lack of Maori representation on the Auckland super city council.

Spokesman Willie Brown says the demonstrators will meet at Red Hill Pa at 7.15am for a prayer service, before heading to the Village Green. Mayor Calum Penrose will speak and afterwards, the group will catch the train or take buses to central Auckland to support the main hikoi at midday.

Mr Brown says the super city stops tangata whenua having a voice, and removes Papakura's own local identity.
