No further sanctions on Fiji

New Zealand will not be imposing further sanctions on Fiji, despite the reappointment of military ruler Frank Bainimarama as Interim Prime Minister and no sign of democratic elections being held.

The commodore has suspended the constitution and imposed martial law including state censorship on the nation's media.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says New Zealand has already got vigorous sanctions in place and any more would involve restrictions on the liberty of New Zealanders to trade or travel to Fiji. He says the Government has also tried to focus sanctions on punishing the guilty and not the innocent people of Fiji.

Mr McCully believes the international community will come to a point where it cannot do much else to help Fiji, which he says seems determined not to hold democratic elections. He says there comes a point where the international community will have to say it has taken all the right steps.

Mr McCully says Bainimarama will not win in the end, but the question will be how long the people of Fiji will have to suffer. He says New Zealand has not sent aid to the Fiji government for some time.
