NZ woman skydives on Everest

05/10/2008 18:40:04

A New Zealand woman has become one of the first three people to skydive over Mount Everest. Wendy Smith and a British and Canadian jumper leaped from an aircraft 142 metres above the summit of the world's tallest mountain.

All three were in freefall for nearly half a minute before opening their canopies, cruising over the mountain, and landing at a flat drop zone.

They used parachutes that were larger than normal size, to help them cruise and descend fast through the thin air of the world's highest drop zone. All three wore oxygen masks.

Ms Smith says she has never seen so many mountains before.
