AgResearch slammed for GE animals plan

10/08/2008 8:28:03

The Government is being urged to create a national biotechnology strategy.

It comes as AgResearch reveals plans to genetically engineer 18 different animals for the commercial production of pharmaceuticals. The proposal is being considered by the Environmental Risk Management Authority, and would include using cattle, sheep and hamsters.

GE Free spokesman Jon Carapiet says the bio-ethics council has no power, and a strategy is needed. He says genetic engineering can be very cruel to animals, and cause deformities to their offspring.

Mr Carapiet is also accusing AgResearch of risking the ruin of New Zealand's clean green image, claiming the scheme will turn the country into a GE playground. He says AgResearch needs to work within New Zealand's existing reputation.

Mr Carapiet says any new technology needs to be used intelligently and ethically.

Public submissions for the proposal close on the 31st of October.
