Clark worried about vigilante threat

07/07/2008 10:09:13

Prime Minister Helen Clark says she is more worried about the threat of vigilantes, than the threat of crime in South Auckland.

More than 10,000 people took part in the Asian Anti-crime Group's march through the Manukau suburb of Botany Downs on Saturday. The rally called on the Government to take a tougher stance on crime.

Organiser Peter Low, has talked about setting up vigilante groups and possibly calling in the triads. Miss Clark says such talk is completely over the top.

"Our police are happy to work with community groups who want to help but to talk about setting up vigilante gangs involving triads, good God! What's that coming to?"

The Police Association says the Triad prey mostly on the Asian community and it is highly unlikely anyone would give them even more control.

Spokesman Greg O'Connor says the police need to be fully resourced and empowered to crack down on crime.
