Freediver breaks second record in Bahamas

10/04/2008 12:20:25

A New Zealander has set a second world record at the freediving Vertical Blue championships in the Bahamas.

Twenty seven-year-old William Trubridge, originally from Hawke's Bay, sank to 107 metres in free immersion diving. The dive was verified by a depth gauge on his wrist and footage from a camera at the bottom.

The achievement did not come without a hitch after the tag he went to retrieve wedged on its carabiner five metres off the plate and ripped the lanyard out of his suit.

Trubridge has stressed the need to stay calm when at such a depth. He says obviously any kind of anxiety is going to increase your heart rate and that will in turn get your brain working faster, which consumes more oxygen meaning the dive is going to be more difficult or you will be less likely to succeed.

The freediver has already set another world record in the competition, sinking to 84 metres in the constant weight (no fins) category.
