PM's electoral office window shattered

01/01/2008 10:28:01

A group has claimed responsibility for delivering a not so welcome new year gift for the Prime Minister.

An outfit calling itself People Power says a white brick was thrown through the front window of Helen Clark's Mt Albert Electoral Office in Auckland just after 2008 was rung in. It says it is the first act of civil disobedience against the Electoral Finance Act. Police say a person was seen on a motor scooter throwing a brick at the window before driving off.

People Power describes itself as a stand alone, non-politically affiliated citizens lobby group that wants to see democracy returned through the repealing of the Electoral Finance Act.

It is the second time the Prime Minister's Electoral Office has been targeted by vandals. Right-wing activist Tim Selwyn took to the office with an axe in November 2004. He was later jailed for willful damage, publishing a seditious statement about the act and fraud.
