Tamira Paszek arrives early

11/12/2007 8:08:02

The ASB Tennis Classic's fifth seed is obviously taking the tournament very seriously, as she arrives in Auckland tonight.

The earliest that players have flown into the country in the past is two weeks before the New Year's Eve event, so 17-year-old Austrian Tamira Paszek is about to smash that record by about a week.

Tournament director Richard Palmer believes Paszek's arrival may set a precedent. He says a lot of players spend two or three weeks in Australia before the first two tournaments and if Paszek has success, players may arrive in New Zealand just as early.

He says hospitality will be extended in the usual manner and Paszek will be ferried to and from the practice courts as she prepares for the event.

Paszek is currently ranked 41st in the world after starting 2007 at 181.
