Rural Report for Friday, November 30, 2007

30/11/2007 16:04:02

Federated Farmers says two new reports on water quality show that New Zealand's fresh water is in good shape.

President Charlie Pedersen says one of the reports on lake water quality found that approximately 60 percent of New Zealand lakes are still likely to have excellent or very good water quality.

The lakes include Wanaka, Te Anau, Tekapo, Rotoma, and Brunner.

Mr Pedersen says water quality has improved substantially from 30 years ago when towns and farmers used waterways as dumping grounds.

He says New Zealand farmers are doing their bit to improve water quality by fencing off waterways, riparian planting, nutrient budgeting, and adopting new farming techniques and technology.

Mr Pederson says farmers are determined that they will further reduce their environmental impact, to ensure that quality overall is heading in the right direction.

A large South Island high country sheep station once owned by the son of former Indonesian dictator Suharto has been sold.

The 2,200 hectare Lilybank Station near Lake Tekapo has been sold without even being officially marketed, however selling agent Chris Herbert is keeping the price tag and identity of its new owners close to his chest.

He's assuring people the Station will remain in New Zealand hands and the owners intend to keep the current operation in place.

Plans by US tycoon Donald Trump for a controversial luxury golf resort in Scotland have been thrown out today by local councillors.

The project hit the headlines as Trump battled local salmon fisherman Michael Forbes, who refused to sell his ramshackle 10-hectare farm.

The property lies right in the middle of the proposed second hole and hotel site.

Part of the complex would have been built on a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Some environmentalists feared the resort would destroy rare plant species and delicate sand dune systems.
