Anti-aspartame campaign discussed

08/11/2007 10:24:02

The spotlight will be on artificial sweeteners at the Safe Foods Campaign's annual meeting in Wellington next week. Co-convenor Alison White says artificial sweetener aspartame can cause a number of adverse effects including headaches, joint pain, and psychological symptoms.

She says they will be discussing the anti-aspartame campaign and trying to find a way to work with the Food Safety Authority on it. Alison White says they are in the difficult situation where the Authority has decided aspartame is safe, and does not want to hear anything to contradict that.

The Food Safety Authority says there is no scientific evidence of any significant adverse effects from aspartame consumed at sensible levels.
