Hope Cunliffe will aid negotiations

01/11/2007 14:00:07

Senior doctors are optimistic the new Health Minister could have a positive influence on their protracted contract negotiations with District Health Boards.

The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists opened its annual conference in Wellington this morning. President Jeff Brown took the opportunity to criticise former Health Minister Pete Hodgson. He lamented the disconnection between doctors and both Mr Hodgson and DHB bosses.

Dr Brown says while new Health Minister David Cunliffe may not be involved in their negotiations, he is in charge of the health system. He says he might be naive, but as he understands it, the Health Minister should be able to say things to DHB bosses that produce action.

Dr Brown hopes Mr Cunliffe's appointment may change the atmosphere and help create a reconnection between himself, doctors and the DHBs.
