UN declaration no-go "shameful"

14/09/2007 15:28:02

The Maori Party is outraged the Government voted against the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

This week the Government described the declaration as incompatible with domestic policy. Australia, Canada and America have also voted against the Declaration.

Maori Party Co-leader Tariana Turia says the New Zealand decision is shameful to the extreme. She says it is a vote against justice, dignity and fundamental freedoms for all.

Mrs Turia says chances are the Government is worried about a possible backlash from voters considering next year is an election year. She says its clear Maori are still thought of as sub-human with only sub-human rights.
