Big names call for new election financing laws

02/04/2007 15:00:22

All Black Anton Oliver and author Patricia Grace are among a group of high-profile New Zealanders who are pushing for new election financing laws.

They are members of the reactivated Coalition for Open Government which was re-launched in Wellington today.

Spokesman and Wellington lawyer Steven Price says New Zealand's current election finance rules are some of the worst in the developed world. He says they need to be strengthened to provide New Zealand with a world-class, incorruptible electoral system.

Mr Price says the group has re-formed in response to Government plans to rewrite election finance laws.

A Government bill is due to be introduced to Parliament in the near future.
