Cycling fatalaties and injuries

03/03/2007 18:28:02

Two cyclists are dead, and another's in hospital with serious injuries following two separate crashes.

A 74-year-old Matamata man died yesterday in Waikato Hospital from injuries he received when his bike was struck from behind by a four-wheel-drive vehicle on State Highway 27. Police say it is not a case of hit and run.

And this morning two cyclists were hit by a truck in Spa Road in Taupo. One of them, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other, a man, was taken to Taupo Hospital with serious injuries.

Cycling Advocates' Network spokesman Stephen McKenrnon says it is particularly tragic the incidents occurred during what was otherwise a very successful nationwide Bike Wise week. He says motorists need to remember if they can not overtake a cyclist safely, they must wait behind until it is safe to do so, as with any slower vehicle.
