Abbott spends time with family before jail

23/02/2007 5:16:03

The Auckland father found guilty of the manslaughter of his disabled daughter has a two week reprieve to spend with his family before being imprisoned.

Garth Abbott was found not guilty of the murder of nine-year old Britney Abbott on August 21, 2005. Britney was killed instantly when her father drove the vehicle she and her sister Shirvaun were in, off Mt Wellington into the quarry below. Britney suffered fatal head injuries while Shirvaun survived the accident. Abbott was acquitted of attempting to murder Shirvaun.

Abbott's lawyer argued he was under stress at the time of the incident due to his daughters' genetic condition, Usher Syndrome, which would eventually leave them deaf and blind. The court heard Abbott also had immigration and marriage problems. He had talked to his wife on his mobile phone shortly before the vehicle drove of the 150 metre cliff.

A High Court judge has allowed Abbott to tie up personal matters and spend time with his wife and remaining family before sentencing next month.

A parents' group, Parents Centre believes there is not enough support for parents who have children with health problems. Chief Executive Viv Gurrey says for generations parenting support has been neglected and the Government is just beginning to recognise it is needed.
