Hamilton gets resource consent for street race

22/11/2006 12:04:21

Hamilton has been given the green light to host a V8 Supercar street race.

The final hurdle of resource consent has been cleared so Hamilton will be the base for the New Zealand V8 Supercar round from April 2008.

New Zealand V8 Supercar promoter Dean Calvert says it is an outstanding result. Calvert says they can not believe how well the process has been handled by the Hamilton City Council to grant the resource consent. He says it has been a long time coming but they are over the moon.

Pukekohe will host its final event next year followed by seven years of a new street race circuit around the streets of Hamilton. 150,000 people are expected to attend the street race when it debuts in 2008.

The event was originally planned for Auckland, but ran into problems with planning permission. A similar plan to hold the race in Wellington also fell through.
