![]() Parliament will be in overdrive this week as it goes into urgency to pass retrospective legislation to validate pre-election overspending. Prime Minister Helen Clark says there is a rush on because the current situation means all but one of the parties are in the gun for unlawful spending. She says she has the support of New Zealand First and United Future, which means the Government has the numbers to pass the legislation. Miss Clark says there is no need to wait for Speaker Margaret Wilson to report back to the House on whether political parties will repay their overspend. She says the Speaker has already recommended validating legislation. Miss Clark says the intention of the legislation is to enable Parliamentary Services - which okayed the $1.2 million overspend - to operate. She says the breadth of the Auditor General's overturning of what has been considered normal practice, makes it very hard to define what Parliamentary Services can pay out on. Urgency will be moved tomorrow. Meanwhile Labour MPs are being asked to cough up five percent of their annual salary to help pay the more than $800,000 the party overspent by at the last election. Newstalk ZB political editor Barry Soper says the tithe will end up costing the Prime Minister around $18,000 and a backbencher without any specific responsibility just $6,000. Even with the tithe the party will still have to come up with more than half the sum. Labour president Mike Williams says an art auction in Christchurch over the weekend raised $45,000 and a dinner for the Indian community brought in $14,000.
