Burial for old soldiers 64 years later

08/08/2006 12:36:03

The remains of missing crew members from a World War Two Stirling bomber shot down in 1942, are due to be buried this month in the Netherlands.

Stirling W7624 of No.15 squadron took off from Cambridgeshire on August 27 for a raid on Germany. On board the aircraft were Air Bomber Sergeant LE Moss and Rear Gunner Flight Sergeant A Smith, both from New Zealand. The plane was attacked by a night fighter and went down in the Netherlands. It crashed near Bentelo, five kilometres west of Hengelo.

Only the body of Flight Sergeant Smith was recovered at the time. He is buried in Ambt Delden cemetery. The remains of the other crew members will be buried with full honours almost 64 years to the day after the plane was lost.
