US President Donald Trump plans to slash $3.6 trillion USD in government spending over the next decade and intends to do so by targeting the poor.
Trump has unveiled plans for an austere Budget, in which he wants lawmakers to cut at least $610 billion USD from Medicaid - the healthcare program for low income earners - and more than $192 billion from food stamps.
Republicans who control the US Congress, and the federal purse strings, will decide whether to make politically sensitive cuts.
According to Reuters, the proposal is unlikely to be approved in its current form.
