Tough talk about vaccination of Aussie children

There's tough talk across the Tasman on parents who won't get their children vaccinated.

The Australian government has announced a "no jab, no pay" crackdown on childcare and welfare benefits for those who won't vaccinate their children.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek wants them labelled "vaccine refusers", not "conscientious objectors".

She says there is nothing conscientious about parents irresponsibly denying their children, and other children, the protection of vaccination.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison says he won't allow any abuse of the religious exemption to the government's "no jab, no pay" policy for vaccinations.

He says if he sees any exemptions being abused, he will shut down the loophole.

From 2016 anyone who doesn't vaccinate their kids because of "conscientious objections" will no longer be eligible for childcare and welfare benefits.

However, a religious exemption is still available for Christian Scientists if a church official writes to the government to declare them a practising member of the religion.
