Nepal's govt renews appeal to international donors

Nepal's government has renewed its appeal to international donors to send tents, tarpaulins and basic food supplies, saying some of the items being sent are of little use.

Following last weekend's devastating earthquake, Nepal requires 400,000 tents and so far has been able to provide only 29,000 to those who need them.

Many remote villages remain cut off from help a week after the earthquake killed more than 6600 people and brought down buildings, temples and homes.

More than 130,000 houses have been destroyed.

Aid agencies are rushing to deliver supplies to remote parts of Nepal.

In some places, 80 percent of buildings have been destroyed.

Oxfam now has 63 workers and 23 support staff attempting to bring shelter, water and food to those who need it.

Oxfam New Zealand's Bert Maerten admits it's a significant logistical challenge to reach some areas.

"People are still living outside and there's a real need for food as well as shelter."

Fellow aid organisation UNICEF is worried about the mental health of hundreds of thousands of children there.

It's working to get essential supplies to the areas of the country worst-hit by the earthquake, but spokeswoman Rose Foley says psychological help is also needed.

"I'm meeting children every day who are just terrified by the experience that they went through, and too afraid to return to their homes even if their homes are standing."

Meanwhile, three New Zealanders are still unaccounted for in Nepal.

Another three who hadn't been heard from since the earthquake have now been in touch with their families.
