Severe weather cuts power to all of South Australia

Power is out across the entire state of South Australia tonight.

The network operator, SA Power, says it's confirmed widespread supply issues have been caused by severe storms in Adelaide.

It's asking people to be ready for extended outages, and to make sure they save the batteries on phones and other devices.

The South Australian premier has warned the state's residents they're likely to be without electricity for some time.

Police have called on all people to avoid travel if possible, and have dispatched patrols to regulate traffic at major Adelaide intersections.

By late afternoon the SES had responded to more than 270 calls for help, most because of fallen trees or rising water.

The blackout has come as strong winds and heavy rain lashed parts of the state, with a warning of super cell thunderstorms across the central and mid-north districts bringing wind gusts of up to 140km/h and possible flash flooding.
