A New Zealander is among a group of foreign card players arrested after Thai police raided their bridge club.

For more than 20 years they've met in a rented room above a restaurant in Pattaya - a place infamous for its seedy nightclubs.

But the BBC's Michael Bristow said it was raided following a complaint about gambling.

"The foreigners, including an 84 year old Dutch woman, were not playing for money. But they were detained anyway because they had broken an obscure Thai law, which outlaws the possession of more than 120 playing cards."

The players spent 12 hours in custody before being released on bail.
