NASA's Messenger probe has slammed into the surface of Mercury.

The probe was meant to orbit Mercury for one year but has spent the past four years orbiting the Solar System's inner-most planet.

NASA says it's sent back extensive data from seven scientific instruments and a radio science investigation.

However the pull of gravity hs today brought its journey to an end .

Just before impacting, Messenger sent back one last image of Mercury's surface.
