Kurdish fighters have reportedly expelled Islamic State group militants from inside the Syrian border town of Kobane.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Kurdish People's Protection Units had full control of the town and that fighting had stopped.

A statement from the Pentagon said the US-led coalition had carried out 17 air strikes against Islamic State positions in Kobane in the 24 hours from January 25 alone.

The battle for Kobane has been fought for the last four months, and the expulsion of Islamic State there is a key symbolic blow to the jihadists' ambitions.
