Clouds billowing from a volcano in Vanuatu threaten a devastating explosion on the Pacific archipelago.

A blister-volcano on Ambae Island is suspected to be packing a huge amount of energy beneath the surface and so an evacuation's been ordered by local authorities.

Vanuatu Daily Post journalist Dan McGarry told Larry Williams residents don't know what to expect.

"The worst case scenario is catastrophic. The most likely scenario is a lot of ash fall, potentially some pyro-plastic flow, that's very hot dense ash flowing down the side of the mountain."

Thousands are in the process of evacuating the island of Ambae.

About 11-thousand are leaving by boat, while others are being airlifted to evacuation centres.

McGarry said locals have no idea how bad the eruption could be.

"This kind of volcano, what they call a blister volcano, as opposed to the cinder cone that you normally see, they pack a lot of pressure under the surface and that's why there's so much concern around this."
