China's president is gaining absolute control of the growing superpower.

The ruling Communist Party has voted unanimously to enshrine Xi Jinping's name and ideology in the country's constitution.

Communist Party founder Mao Zedong is the only other leader who has received the honour while he was still alive.

CNN correspondent Matt Rivers said Xi Jinping is exerting absolute control and purging his political opponents, under the guise of stamping out corruption.

"[It is] a concerted effort to make the party felt in every aspect of life," he said, which includes "building up and better controlling the military" alongside censoring online conversations.

More than 2000 delegates voted to approve "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" as one of the party's guiding principles.

"The Chinese people and nation have a great and bright future ahead," Jinping told the delegates at the end of the party's twice-a--decade major congress.

"At this great time, we feel more self-confident and proud. At the same time, we also deeply feel a heavy sense of responsibility."

Jinping also promised, in his philosophy, to address China's "unbalanced and inadequate development".
