Second, larger quake shakes central Italy

UPDATED 8.42am An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck 68 km east of the central Italian city of Perugia, the United States Geological Survey says, the second of the evening whose tremors were felt as far away as the capital Rome.

The first quake registered at 5.4 magnitude and struck central Italy at a depth of 10 kilometres.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake struck near the border between the regions of Marche and Umbria, but the epicentre is still unclear. It was also felt in Rome.

The quakes on Wednesday evening came two months after almost 300 people were killed in the region by a quake that levelled several small towns.
