Carterton tragedy photograpgher arrested in Uganda

Updated 3:00pm: Family of a New Zealand photographer arrested in Uganda are very concerned for his wellbeing.

Wairarapa based New Zealand First MP Ron Mark says he's been talking to the family and has been in touch with Minister of Foreign Affairs Murray McCully.

"I've spoken to his sister, his niece is with me now, at the moment people are just waiting and hoping and praying that diplomatic efforts to make contact with Geoff are successful and that they can get a safe release."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it's aware of reports a Kiwi photographer has been arrested in Uganda.

Posts on Facebook report Geoff Walker, who was taking photos as the Carterton hot air balloon disaster unfolded in 2012, has been arrested.

One post says it's because he took photos of the Rubongi Army Barracks in Tororo, and that as a result he's in a Tororo Police cell.

The author of the post says he can't imagine what Geoff is going through right now.

Posts from other friends are highlight their concern for the photographer.

An MFAT spokesperson says the New Zealand Embassy in Ethiopia is following up with authorities.
