Polling booths have closed in NSW with early indications suggesting Premier Mike Baird will be returned comfortably.

Hundreds of thousands of people skipped the sausage sizzles and cake stalls at polling booths, casting their votes online instead.

More than 230,000 people voted online this year.

Compared to 50,000 in the 2011 state election, that's a near five-fold increase.
