New Zealanders could be in line for tougher security measures on domestic flights.

The Australian government is tipped to introduce similar security checks that apply to international flights, to passengers flying internally.

It comes after two men have been charged over a failed terror plot to blow up a flight departing from Sydney last month.

Aviation commentator Peter Clark says in that instance the terror threat was viable and extra security measures are a logical step.

"It's really got a huge impact internationally and it could flow on around the world and even into New Zealand to domestic flights."

Mr Clark said currently domestic security operates as just a skeleton.

"If we're going to move further forward now looking for explosives and testing for explosives, all that takes time and the undertaking will be huge and very expensive."
