A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has just struck the Solomon Islands a day after another big quake.

This morning's quake hit just after 8am (NZT) at a depth of 10km.

It follows a 7.8 magnitude shake yesterday morning.

The Pacific Tsunami Centre put out a revised message just before 9am (NZT).

An evaluation of the quake said: "Based on all available data, hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts.

"Tsunami threat forecast updates - tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3m above the tide level are possible along some coast of the Solomon Islands.''

Tsunami waves are also forecast to be less than 0.3m above the tide level for the coasts of Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

The Pacific Tsunami Centre said government agencies responsible for threatened coastal areas needed to take action to alert people in those areas to evacuate immediately.

"Persons located in threatened coastal areas should stay alert for information and follow instructions from national and local authorities.''
