Thousands of activists have converged at the United Nations to lobby government representatives to commence negotiations to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons.
Among them is Kiwi Alyn Ware, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, who's leading public action to wave goodbye to nuclear weapons .
The four week long Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference begins in New York today.
Mr Ware says the treaty was an agreement by the non-nuclear countries not to acquire nuclear weapons, and for those with them to agree to work towards their elimination.
"But the nuclear weapons states have not kept their part. That's threatening the non-proliferation regime. In these states hold on to their nuclear weapons, other countries will be encouraged to get them."
