Abbott jokes away leadership speculation

If Australia's Prime Minister is worried about rumours his leadership is under threat, he isn't showing it - even making a joke about it at a media conference in Auckland with our Prime Minister today.

Mr Abbott doesn't seem too worried.

"John and I obviously have discussed leadership, and I've come to the conclusion that John's leadership is safe, so good on you mate."

Australian media is reporting Prime Minister Tony Abbott could face a spill motion next week.

It'd be the seventh spill vote in Australia since 2010 - but John Key doesn't think there's a problem across the Tasman.

"I think it's a bit harsh to describe it as one of the more unstable democracies in the Pacific. The reality is that there are always times of political turmoil and change."

Australia's Foreign Minister is denying there'll be an attempt to roll the country's Prime Minister next week.

Speaking to The Nation, Julie Bishop played down the rumours.

"I am not aware of any attempt to bring a spill motion to challenge the leadership. I'm not aware of any such approach."
