Last year was the hottest on record, according climate agencies in the US and Europe.
Globally, the temperature averaged 14.8 Celsius - warmer than the previous record in 2015 by about point-two of a degree.
Compared to the average before the industrial revolution, temperatures are about 1.3C higher.
Official figures for New Zealand are due out on Monday.
