UPDATED 8.51PM: There's disappointment from Wellington Airport its plans for a longer runway have been grounded.

Pilots have won a court victory against a decision allowing shorter safety areas at the ends the proposed runway extension.

The Court of Appeal has ordered the Civil Aviation Authority to revisit the airport's application for a 90-metre safety area.

Wellington Airport CEO Steve Sanderson says they're now considering their next move.

"We are surprised considering that the High Court decision was very decisive and didn't give much leeway in terms of judgement."
